“It might be challenging for centrally contracted red-ball players, but there is a possibility for some of the white-ball players to join us. It’s not a massive tournament, but we have received significant interest from English players and have had positive discussions with them. “Ultimately, we want what is best for the players. If they can enhance their incomes while playing quality cricket that contributes to their careers, boards generally support it. I cannot speak on behalf of the ECB, but I don’t believe there is any animosity between us or a stance of ‘we won’t release players, stay away from us.’”

Moeen Ali recently confirmed that he has received an offer, believed to be from the Texas Super Kings, to participate in MLC in 2024. Additionally, England’s white-ball internationals have no scheduled fixtures between the conclusion of the men’s T20 World Cup in June and their home series against Australia in September. MLC’s launch has already impacted the Hundred, the ECB’s 100-ball competition entering its third season. Geale stated, “There’s a genuine curiosity about coming here, and it’s not a bad place to come and tour, the US: they can bring their family or their golf clubs and stay on for a bit, so we haven’t struggled there. The interest from players has been really good, and there are some pretty star-studded line-ups.”

With MLC expected to expand in the coming years, the standard of overseas players in the league is notably high. However, Geale reiterated that MLC’s objective is not to enter into competition with other leagues but to provide an attractive opportunity for players. MLC has formed strategic partnerships with two Australian states, New South Wales and Victoria, resulting in the establishment of the Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns franchises, respectively.
