Jaiswal's Debut Test Century

Yashasvi Jaiswal created an indelible memory on Day 2 of the first Test between India and West Indies in Dominica. With an outstanding century in his debut Test, his jubilant celebrations beautifully depicted the magnitude of his achievement. In the 70th over’s first ball, Jaiswal elegantly dispatched a shortish delivery from off-spinner Alick Athanaze towards long leg, immediately charging towards the non-striker’s end. Though a simple single would have sufficed, he sprinted as if every run mattered, fueled by the excitement of reaching a century on his Test debut.

Jaiswal's Century, Team Celebrates

As he completed the single to bring up his century, Jaiswal removed his helmet, leaped in the air, and erupted in exultation. He then acknowledged the Indian dressing room, a gesture that has become his signature after every century. The team, rising to their feet, erupted in applause and cheers.

Rohit, Jaiswal's Mentorship Moment

After relishing the acknowledgment from the crowd and his teammates, the 21-year-old turned his attention to captain and opening partner Rohit Sharma. It was a heartwarming sight akin to a young student seeking appreciation from his mentor. Rohit embraced Jaiswal with a smile, capturing a moment of immense pride and camaraderie. The cameras quickly captured the beaming smile on Virat Kohli’s face, adding to the wholesome nature of the occasion. It was a special moment for Indian cricket, representing the collective joy and unity within the team.

Jaiswal's Record Debut Century

Jaiswal had every reason to celebrate and cherish his remarkable innings. He became the first Indian opener to score a Test century on debut away from home. His century marked the 17th time an Indian player achieved this feat. Additionally, he became the fourth youngest Indian to reach a century in his debut Test. Notably, Jaiswal’s partnership of 229 runs with Rohit is the highest for any Indian opening pair against the West Indies, surpassing the previous record set by Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar in Mumbai in 2002, where they had put together 201 runs for the first wicket.

Jaiswal, Rohit Conquer Slow Pitch

Their innings showcased classical Test match batting, as the two accomplished batsmen wore down the West Indies bowling attack, which lacked the firepower to trouble them. Jaiswal’s maiden century came off 215 balls, while Rohit took 220 balls. Despite the lack of assistance from the pitch, the slower nature of the surface made stroke-making challenging. The Windsor Park pitch offered little pace, causing difficulties for aggressive stroke players like Rohit and Jaiswal. However, as the day progressed, the deliveries became slower, enabling them to play their shots more comfortably.

Jaiswal, Rohit Dominate Bowlers

Jaiswal’s technique, particularly his ability to play on the back foot against slow bowlers like left-arm orthodox Jomel Warrican, was commendable. The West Indies pacers, Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach, proved ineffective due to their lack of pace. Jaiswal completed his fifty with a powerful pull shot against Joseph, while Rohit elegantly flicked the same bowler over deep mid-wicket for a majestic six. Their centuries were achieved in contrasting styles, with Jaiswal finding a single by nudging the ball behind square off Athanaze, while Rohit gracefully guided a full toss through covers for a boundary.

The impressive performances of Jaiswal, Rohit, and the collective support and appreciation from the team made it a memorable and heartening day for Indian cricket.
