Stead Extended as NZ Coach

Gary Stead has been granted a two-year extension as the head coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team, which means he will continue in his role until June 2025. Stead initially took up the position in late 2018 for a two-year term, and his contract was later renewed until the conclusion of the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. The latest extension will cover the entire World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, including the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the WTC final if New Zealand qualifies. According to a statement released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), the decision to extend Stead’s contract was made following a comprehensive and inclusive consultation process. The NZC received unanimous support from various stakeholders, including players, BLACKCAPS support staff, Major Association coaches and support staff, the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, and the NZC High Performance Unit staff.

Stead Continues Leading NZC

Bryan Stronach, NZC’s GM High Performance, expressed confidence in Stead’s ability and the positive impact he has had on the team’s performance. Stronach highlighted the impressive results achieved under Stead’s guidance and emphasized that Stead’s commitment to taking the team forward was unwavering. The decision to extend Stead’s tenure reflects the belief that he still has much to offer and contribute to the team’s success. With the unanimous backing of the stakeholders, Stead’s continuation as the head coach will provide stability and continuity to the New Zealand men’s cricket team as they aim to achieve further milestones in the coming years.

Stead Remains; Specialist Coaches Added

Stronach also discussed the possibility of implementing a split-coaching arrangement, but after careful consideration, it was determined that maintaining the status quo with Gary Stead as the sole head coach was the best option. The strong and positive culture within the team, along with the majority of players featuring in all three formats, supported this decision. In addition, the concept of a “fourth coach” was introduced, where specialist coaches with specific skills or knowledge of overseas environments or formats would support the New Zealand touring teams. This approach has already been implemented with the appointments of Stephen Fleming, Shane Bond, Saqlain Mushtaq, Luke Wright, and Thilan Samaraweera.

Southee Praises Coach Gary

NZC CEO David White expressed satisfaction with the thorough discussions and consultations that preceded the decision, emphasizing Gary’s qualities as a person and his competence in the role, along with the players’ support and trust in him. Test captain Tim Southee highlighted the importance of managing both the technical aspects and the well-being of the players in the head coach’s role. He commended Gary for the success he has achieved, leading the team to finals in all three formats and the recent triumph in the World Test Championship. Southee acknowledged the challenges faced by players and support staff due to extensive travel and time away from their families, making effective workload management a crucial aspect of the job.
